Obama – “I’ll bankrupt coal” …. and other shocking Obama claims

For those who might have missed it Barack Obama completed an interview with the San Fransico Chronicle in January 2008. The audio portion of the interview is posted on the Chronicle’s web site, “SF GATE.COM”. The interview can be located on the site here:  http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/blogs/opinionshop/detail?&entry_id=23562 You can listen for yourself.

In the interview Obama says a number things that are shocking.

On Coal

Obama says, “So if somebody wants to build a coal-powered plant, they can; it’s just that it will bankrupt them because they’re going to be charged a huge sum for all that greenhouse gas that’s being emitted.” Obama also said, “That will also generate billions of dollars that we can invest in wind, solar, biodiesel and other alternative energy approaches. The only thing that I have said with respect to coal, I haven’t been some coal booster. What I have said is that for us to take coal off the table as a ideological matter as opposed to saying if technology allows us to use coal in a clean way, we should pursue it.”

Despite comments to the contrary – Joe Biden confirmed that the Obama-Biden ticket oppose even clean coal – see the video below where Biden tells an environmental activist who questioned why coal is necessary given clean, effective alternatives like wind and solar, “we’re not supporting clean coal.” Obama/Biden supports clean coal plants in China – but “no coal” for the US. How will this effect America – 50% of American energy is generated from coal fueled energy plants.

In the interview Obama spoke about his energy plan which includes an “aggressive” cap and trade policy  which will charge polluters in an effort to curb greenhouse gas emissions. These statements confirm or were the source of claims that Obama planned to initiate “carbon use” based tax policy in America a policy that the Europeans are trying to impose in Europe.  A “carbon use” tax policy would add taxes to heating, electricity and fuel bills, driving up prices of every product consumed in the United States. Carbon use based taxes are one of the most regressive taxes (regressive – the poor and middle class pay more than the rich) that a government can imploy – just like sales taxes. Obama notes that “our electricity rates will “skyrocket”.

Why do the Democrats continue to say “NO” to US based energy assets – “NO” to Coal and “NO” to oil drilling –

On the Democratic Primaries

Obama defends the Democratic Party Primary system (from clearly logical complaints made by President Clinton – who is obviously a right wing nut becuase he voices his criticism). Obama is dismissive of the suggested changes – PUMA has it right on this issue.

Obama on telling the truth –

OK – so I already knew OBama was liar _ I read “Dreams of my father”. Obviously I know the history of Kenya better than Obama does – sure he lies – all the time – to hear him admit it is something else. Obama states, “well I generally I tell the truth” as if truthfulness is a small thing compared to winning the contest …..

Reminds me of the “clinging to bibles and guns” comment …………..

  1. Homeland Security is hoping for McCain to win. I have proof of that .
If you are in the coal mining bizz then vote McCain because Obama has you in his sights to shut you down. PA needs to remember what happened when the steel plant shut down. How many ghost town will Obamas make. If it wasnt for company’s like Phoenix Glass that part of PA would have gone out . You dont kill jobs ,You dont raise taxes and spend more on a weak dollar. YOU CUT TAXES YOU SPEND LESS AND YOU KEEP AMERICANS WORKING.

  2. Maybe we can read more about Obama lies in Bill Ayers new book coming out after the election -Race Course Against White Supremacy

  3. Yes, let’s go for clean coal! Yeah! Its like the laser disc of the video formats! Yeah, that’ll work great 10-20 years down the road.

Get a grip my friends, the world is changing. Don’t get stuck in the past. Hard choices come now so that we can have a future. Coal is a part of the past. Painful, but true.

Clinton succeeded by moving the Dems to the right, towards the center. Obama will do the same. Unfortunately the right also kept moving to the right (deluded by the success of the Rovian fantasy of the permanent majority of the right). Keep moving to the right and you’ll see what happens. There will be less and less of you. The Dems figured this out, can you?

  4. Sam, Your post shows your a 20 something. Alternative energy research didn’t start last year – they have been at it for 35 years – try doing some research and base your opinion on facts. Viable alternative energy that can be massively produced is years away – maybe more than 20 –

You are narrow minded, think about the consequences of what you propose – what are middle and lower class families suppose to heat their homes with in the interim and how much do you think you can charge them and be fair. Are you so out of touch that you don’t know that we have children going hungry in this country already and millions stuggling to stay in their homes. your suggestion would quadruple the number of people who wouldn’t be able to heat or light their homes. 50% of our electricity comes from coal. (LET ME CLUE YOU IN – MOST OF THE ANTI COAL CROWD IS HEAVILY INVESTED ELSEWHERE – IT ISN’T ECOLOGY – IT’S MONEY).

The ecnomy isn’t going to turn around for 2-3 years at best and unemployment is headed above 10% – in some areas it is already at 14%. To quadruple the charge for electricity to these people, when coal is available, is unethical and immoral. Get your head out of the clouds.
We wouild all like cheap, clean, alternative energy, there is none on the immediate horizon. Until we get there, all energy alternatives must be utilized –
Check out the history of medical research to cure aids – despite everyone being on the same page, working in the same direction and trillions of dollars in research we are no closer to “curing aids” then we were in 1980. Sure we have improved treatment protocols but we are no closer to a cure. Whether it is AIDS or Energy we need to continue research, but you are a fool if you think America can afford to ignore Coal and Oil.
I suggest you enroll in a “logic” class. Your “laser disc” anaolgy is beyond humoress …. The laser disc will work just fine (just as coal will) in 20 years – the laser disc will not change – you are speculating that a new format or device will be developed – WE SHOULD NOT THROW OUT OUR LASER DISCS UNTIL THE NEW TECHNOLIGY HAS BEEN TESTED AND IS ON THE SHELVES – Then most working people will half to wait a year or two until they can afford the new technology. Same with coal and oil.
Wake up and join the real world.
